Just two numbers — height and thickness where the blade meets the handle (the machi) — and leave the handle on, which is the normal way to measure. A ruler is fine. Measuring guide. We do want the numbers: each handle is shaped to one knife, never cut to one size for everyone. If measuring is not practical, tell us the maker and model instead, and we will work from that. Or leave it blank and send them after checkout — we ask again on your order page, and work starts once we have what we need.

Made to order

Made to fit: this handle is made after you order and cut to your knife — we hold no finished stock. Exact dimensions are confirmed from your blade and tang measurements before work starts. We do not use one universal size for every knife.

Returns: because your handle is cut to one knife, it cannot be returned simply because you changed your mind — see the cancellation policy for what you get back at each stage. Damage, faults and anything not as described are always covered.

Amboyna is the burl of Pterocarpus indicus, and it is the most figured wood we work. The grain does not run — it swirls, knots and eyes its way across every facet, deep red through orange-brown, so the eight faces of an octagon each read differently. No two blanks are alike, and neither are two handles.

This build puts a marbled buffalo horn ferrule above the burl, separated by twin copper spacers, and finishes the butt with a pink coral end cap over a third copper spacer. The copper warms as it ages and picks up the red in the burl.

  • Species: Pterocarpus indicus (burl)
  • Origin: Southeast Asia
  • Density: 0.75 g/cc
  • Build: marbled buffalo horn ferrule · copper spacers · pink coral end cap
  • Care: wipe dry; re-oil every 6 months
