A wa handle is fitted to the knife, not the other way around, so the few minutes you spend measuring the tang decide whether the finished handle sits tight and balanced or fights the blade. The tang is the unsharpened steel that runs back from the blade into the handle, and on most Japanese knives it is a hidden tang that tapers as it goes. Know what you are actually capturing. Turn your measurements into a build

You are ready when

Pause and recheck when
- A number can only be reached by exposing the edge unsafely.
- The current handle is tight and you are guessing at the hidden length.
- Your readings change a lot between attempts.
What to have on the bench
- A digital caliper for the small front height and width, and a steel rule or tape for length.
- A folded towel or board to rest the spine on so the edge never faces your hand.
- A phone or camera, and a piece of plain paper to lay the knife on for scale.
- The knife’s overall details to hand: blade type and blade length.
Step 1: Find the front of the tang
Locate exactly where the blade ends and the tang begins. On a wa knife this is usually where the machi (the small notch or step) meets the front of the handle or ferrule. Rest the spine on a towel so the edge points away from you, and fix that front line clearly before measuring anything, because every other number is referenced from it.
If the existing handle hides the transition, the front of the ferrule is your reference point. Note it, and remember that the steel continues back inside the handle from there.
Step 2: Measure tang height and width at the front
With the knife resting on its spine, set the caliper across the steel at that front line to read the tang height, top to bottom. Then read the width at the same spot, the thickness of the steel through the faces. Take each reading two or three times and write it down. These two numbers define the mouth of the handle, so they are the ones most worth getting right.
Keep your fingers on the spine and the flats, never near the edge. If the front of the tang is buried in a tight handle, measure the exposed steel just ahead of the ferrule and note that it is a front-of-blade reading rather than the true tang face.
Step 3: Estimate tang length and taper
Tang length is the one number you often cannot see directly, because the tang is hidden inside the handle. If the handle is already loose or you are rehandling, you can measure the bare tang from its front to its tip. If the handle is intact and tight, do not pry it apart for a number, estimate the length against the outside of the current handle and say it is an estimate.
For taper, note whether the tang clearly narrows from the front toward the tip in both height and width, which most hidden tangs do. A maker uses that to plan a burned-in or epoxied seat, so even a rough note that it narrows noticeably or stays fairly even is useful. Step 4: Photograph for scale and proof
Photos catch what numbers miss. Lay the knife flat on plain paper and shoot straight down from the side so the whole blade and handle are in frame, then a top-down shot, then a close end-on view of the front of the handle and ferrule. A rule or the paper edge in frame gives scale and lets the maker sanity-check your readings.
Clear photos plus your four numbers are usually enough to fit a handle confidently. They also protect you: if a measurement is slightly off, the images let the maker catch it before any wood is cut.
How the numbers shape the handle
Tang dimensions do more than set the bore, they steer the balance. A longer, heavier tang sits more weight toward the hand, which can help a forward-heavy gyuto in the 210 to 240mm range feel more planted, while a short, light tang on a nimble petty around 120 to 150mm leaves the knife tip-led and quick.
