The Wood

Curly maple is one of nature's most captivating wood figures. The rippled, three-dimensional grain creates a shimmering chatoyance that shifts and moves as you turn the handle in light. Each piece is hand-selected for the intensity of its figure. The light, creamy tones of maple provide a beautiful canvas for the curly grain pattern, and the wood develops a warm honey patina over time.

Made to fit: this handle is made after you order and cut to your knife — we hold no finished stock. Exact dimensions are confirmed from your blade and tang measurements before work starts. We do not use one universal size for every knife.

Curly maple displays a mesmerizing three-dimensional figure in the grain — a shimmering effect that shifts as you turn the handle in your hand. Each piece is hand-selected for the intensity of its figure. Finished with a black buffalo horn ferrule — a clean, dark edge against the pale, shifting figure.

Maple is lighter than the dense tropical hardwoods, giving this handle a quicker, more neutral balance ideal for fast-moving work — petty knives, smaller gyutos, honesuki. The pale, warm tone takes on a subtle amber patina over years, and the curl deepens with the oils it collects from use.
