Just two numbers — height and thickness where the blade meets the handle (the machi) — and leave the handle on, which is the normal way to measure. A ruler is fine. Measuring guide. We do want the numbers: each handle is shaped to one knife, never cut to one size for everyone. If measuring is not practical, tell us the maker and model instead, and we will work from that. Or leave it blank and send them after checkout — we ask again on your order page, and work starts once we have what we need.

Made to order

Made to fit: this handle is made after you order and cut to your knife — we hold no finished stock. Exact dimensions are confirmed from your blade and tang measurements before work starts. We do not use one universal size for every knife.

Returns: because your handle is cut to one knife, it cannot be returned simply because you changed your mind — see the cancellation policy for what you get back at each stage. Damage, faults and anything not as described are always covered.

African blackwood (Dalbergia melanoxylon) is among the densest woods used for handles — naturally oily, fine and even in grain, and it polishes to a near-mirror black with faint purple undertones. Here it is bookended: a white buffalo horn ferrule at the blade end and a matching horn end cap at the butt, each separated from the wood by a bright nickel silver spacer.

The capped butt is not only visual. It protects the end grain from the knocks a bare wood end picks up on a rail or in a drawer, and it patinas at the same rate as the ferrule, so the two ends stay matched over years of use. The extra material at the butt also shifts balance very slightly rearward, which suits longer blades.

  • Species: Dalbergia melanoxylon
  • Origin: Mopane savannas, southern Africa
  • Density: 1.08 g/cc
  • Build: white buffalo horn ferrule · nickel silver spacers · matching white horn end cap
  • Care: wipe dry; re-oil every 6 months
