Short answer: Stabilized maple refers to resin treatment, not curly figure, dye, or surface finish. TurnTex describes its Cactus Juice system as an acrylic-based, heat-cured resin that impregnates porous material, hardens it, and increases its resistance to moisture. That explains the treatment and its practical benefit for this documented system. See the TurnTex resin description.
Treatment, figure, dye, and finish
Figure. Figure is the visible pattern of the individual maple piece. “Curly” describes that appearance; it does not describe resin treatment. Horn & Grain lists Curly Maple and Stabilized Maple as separate choices, so compare the actual piece rather than assuming the Curly Maple option has been stabilized.
Stabilization. TurnTex explains that its process uses vacuum to remove air from porous wood, after which resin occupies that space when pressure returns and is then cured. See the maker’s stabilizing questions and answers.
Dye. Dye adds color but is not required for stabilization. TurnTex says dye can color the stabilizing resin and that different pieces—even pieces from the same log—can respond differently. Use photographs of the proposed piece to judge its color and pattern rather than expecting a sample image to repeat exactly. See the TurnTex dye information.
Finish. The finish applied to the completed handle is separate from stabilization. Ask which finish is on the proposed handle and which care products are compatible with it.
What to compare before choosing
Ask to see the actual proposed piece, preferably with its finished faces photographed in the same light. Compare figure placement, color, variation between faces, and surface appearance. Also ask whether dye was used, how the wood was stabilized, and what finish and care guidance apply.
If balance matters, ask for the proposed finished dimensions and expected finished-handle mass for the build. Material choice alone does not determine tang fit or installed balance. The size guide, wood guide, and wood comparison can help narrow the choice before reviewing the actual piece.
Keep fit separate from material
If the existing handle is secure, leave it installed. Clear photographs plus the visible junction height and face-to-face thickness can help assess fit, although they do not reveal the hidden tang dimensions.
If the tang is already exposed, record exactly three primary dimensions in millimetres: usable length from the shoulder or seating line to the tip, height near the shoulder, and face-to-face thickness at that same station. Blade length, maker or model, and wider knife photographs are optional context. See the custom ordering guide for the fitting route.
Care and current choices
Follow the care requirements of the actual finish: hand-wash, dry promptly, and avoid soaking, the dishwasher, and direct heat. Before applying oil, confirm that it is compatible with the finish; the wa-handle care guide provides the fuller routine.
Use the handle configurator to compare Stabilized Maple with Curly Maple and other current choices, then browse the handle shop. For appearance, make the final comparison from photographs of the same proposed piece under consistent lighting.
