Is Macassar “real” ebony?

What does the figure actually look like?
Macassar ebony has a jet-black ground streaked with ribbons that range from golden caramel to rich amber. The contrast can be bold: dark ebony interrupted by warm lines that make the handle immediately different from a uniformly black one. Paired with a black buffalo horn ferrule, the striped body remains the focus while the ferrule gives the front of the handle a quiet visual boundary.
Those streaks are as unique as a fingerprint. Their spacing, width, direction and balance of black, gold and amber change from one piece of wood to the next. A photograph can therefore show the character of Macassar ebony, but it cannot show the exact handle you will receive. It shows a handle, not your handle.

Does it feel like ebony in the hand?
Yes. Macassar has the exceptionally hard, dense character associated with ebony and takes a brilliant polish that brings its figure forward. Its visual warmth does not mean it behaves like a soft or lightweight wood.
Density also has a practical consequence: it places more weight at the rear of the knife than a lighter handle material would. That can shift the knife’s balance toward the handle. Some people deliberately want that feeling; others prefer a more forward-weighted knife. Density is therefore a balance choice, not an automatic upgrade. The stripes may make Macassar more special visually, but they do not make rear weight universally better.

Who should choose Macassar—and who should choose something plainer?
Choose Macassar when you want the handle to be a visible part of the knife’s identity. It suits a statement piece, a knife chosen to mark an occasion, or a gift where one-of-a-kind material feels more meaningful than perfect uniformity. The changing gold and amber ribbons make every build personal without requiring decoration beyond the wood itself.
It is also the honest choice only if you welcome natural variation. If you have fallen in love with one exact stripe arrangement in a photograph, Macassar may ask for more uncertainty than you want. Your handle will share the black-and-gold character, but its pattern will be its own.
Choose our plain ebony instead when the goal is quiet, consistent black. Plain ebony keeps the hard, dense, polished character while allowing the silhouette and the knife itself to take more of the attention. Our catalogue Macassar handle combines a Macassar ebony body with a black buffalo horn ferrule. It can be made with an octagonal, oval, D-shape or round profile.
On the product page, the size recommender uses your knife type and blade length to select the appropriate size tier. That recommendation gets the process started; it is not a substitute for checking the actual knife. After checkout, we confirm the fit from your knife’s measurements before making the handle.
If the handle is a gift, you can choose the material and profile for the recipient, but we will still need the relevant knife measurements before fit can be confirmed. A beautiful wood choice does not remove the need for a sound mechanical match.
