Should You Soak a Shapton Whetstone or Just Wet It?

Check the stone’s maker and model: soak rules differ by product family. SHAPTON’s FAQ says routine soaking is unnecessary; for first use it offers a five-to-six-minute immersion for a smoother feel and warns against soaking for thirty minutes or longer. NANIWA’s guide distinguishes stone families: some need only a wet surface, while other listed lines call for a five-to-twenty-minute soak. Do not choose by grit number alone.

SHAPTON FAQ Wet the face; routine pre-soaking is unnecessary For first use, 5–6 minutes’ immersion is offered for a smoother feel; avoid 30 minutes or more
SHAPTON RockStar Avoid long water exposure; wipe dry after use Its care page gives no separate first-use soak time

These are manufacturer instructions, not a universal timetable. NANIWA’s guide groups specific lines and models, so read the instructions for the exact stone rather than applying its list to another maker.

Use this quick check before sharpening

  1. Read the label for the exact maker and model.
  2. Open that maker’s current care instructions; do not infer preparation from grit, color, or thickness.
  3. Wet or soak only as that product’s instructions say, then secure the stone on a stable surface.
  4. After use, clean and dry it by the same maker’s directions.

SHAPTON’s RockStar page separately says not to expose the stone to water for long periods and to wipe it dry after use; leaving it wet or wrapped in a wet towel could soften it and reduce durability (RockStar care). The general FAQ’s first-use option is not a separate RockStar instruction.

For a basic stable station, see the first whetstone setup guide. For broader sharpening references, see the kitchen tools guide.
