There is no universal millimetre depth or percentage for seating a tang in a wa handle. The intended seat depends on the actual tang, the mortise it enters, and the geometry of the knife and handle together. The tang does not automatically need to reach the end of the bore, and the blade shoulder does not always need to finish flush with the ferrule. A deliberate machi gap can be part of the intended geometry; it is not the same thing as a loose joint.

Seating depth is a relationship, not one number
“Seating depth” describes how far the usable tang extends into the tang cavity—the bore, slot or mortise—at the knife’s intended position. Usable tang length runs from the shoulder or intended seating line to the tip. Cavity depth is a separate internal dimension. The cavity may continue beyond the tang’s intended position, so knowing its depth alone does not reveal the correct seat.
Depth contributes to hidden support and mass distribution, but neither can be judged from depth alone. Tang cross-section, taper and alignment; cavity shape and fit; and the proportions of the finished knife remain part of the same geometry. Deeper is not automatically better. Read the front of the handle carefully
The front of the handle can show three different things:
- Machi gap or visible neck: the machi is the shoulder or step where the blade narrows into the tang. A short length of steel may intentionally remain visible between that reference and the handle face.
- Visible clearance at the handle mouth: space can be seen around the tang where it enters the handle. This differs from a deliberate machi gap, and the front view cannot establish the hidden support.
- Movement: the blade and handle shift relative to one another. Movement is a functional problem, not a visual convention.
Sakai Ichimonji describes both visible and tucked-in machi conventions on single-edged knives. That establishes variation, not the safety of any particular gap. Do not classify unexplained clearance from appearance alone. A changing gap, relative movement or any crack calls for prompt assessment.
Map the intended seat before fitting
The intended geometry should answer a few specific questions:
- Where is the intended shoulder or seating line?
- How much usable tang exists from that line to the tip?
- Does the cavity correspond to the tang’s height, thickness, taper and path at the intended position?
- Does the planned blade-to-handle relationship—including an intentional machi gap or no gap—match the design, and is the blade aligned with the handle?
These questions map compatibility; they do not create a universal clearance or minimum insertion rule. Do not treat the end of the cavity as the seating stop unless the knife or build’s intended geometry defines it that way. Bottoming out is not a universal fit test, and resistance or hand pressure cannot certify hidden support. If the intended seat is unknown, a percentage cannot supply the missing information.
Measure only what is actually available
If a secure handle is installed, leave it in place. Visible junction height and face-to-face thickness are useful partial evidence, but they are not hidden tang dimensions and cannot reveal seating depth. Handle length, blade length, maker or model, and wider photographs are optional context.
For evaluating seating depth when the tang is already exposed, record exactly three primary dimensions in millimetres:
- Usable length: shoulder or seating line to tip.
- Height: near the shoulder.
- Thickness: face to face at the same station used for height.

Keep depth separate from the next job
Seating depth describes where the tang is intended to sit. Reshafting covers choosing and preparing the replacement route, while installation is fitting a replacement handle; those jobs can overlap, but they answer more than the depth question. Cracks or movement call for immediate assessment. Oiling, where appropriate to the finish, is condition maintenance and cannot diagnose or repair hidden fit.
