Dry a washed wa handle in three stages: remove accessible water with a towel, leave the handle exposed to ordinary room air, and store it only after remaining moisture has had a chance to evaporate. Do not accelerate the process with heat or assume that a wiped surface proves the hidden junction is dry.
At the towel
Use a clean, absorbent cloth to blot the handle immediately after washing. Attend to the handle faces, ferrule, blade neck and accessible seam at the front of the handle, where small beads of water can remain. Wipe around the junction rather than probing into it or dismantling a secure handle.
This prompt approach is consistent with Japanese Knife Imports’ knife-care guidance, which supports hand washing, prompt drying and avoiding prolonged water and heat exposure. If the handle includes horn, Abbeyhorn likewise calls for immediate towel drying and warns against soaking, strong heat and rapid temperature changes.
In the open
Place the knife securely where the handle is uncovered and ordinary room air can circulate around it. Do not put it straight into a roll, sheath, drawer insert or other enclosure, and do not use a hair dryer, radiator, oven, direct sun or another heat source.
Opinel’s wooden-handle guidance distinguishes careful towel drying from the later period in which remaining moisture evaporates. That distinction matters: a towel removes surface water, but moisture may also linger near seams or within an opening.
There is no universal internal drying time. It depends on the construction, how much water reached the handle, the finish and the surrounding conditions. If the knife was soaked or water is known to have entered a gap, an apparently dry exterior is not proof that routine drying has resolved the issue.
Before storage
Check that the handle and accessible junction remain free of moisture and that the storage location or cover is itself dry. In humid conditions, allow extra opportunity for natural evaporation rather than relying on a fixed timer; the humid-weather storage guide explains how to assess the location.
