How to Clean a Knife Block: Wood, Bristle and Self-Sharpening Types

Start by identifying the block’s insert. A slotted wooden block, a removable bristle insert and a self-sharpening block do not share one cleaning method. Take the knives out, follow the care instructions for that model, and put back only clean, dry knives. If you cannot identify the insert, look up the model before cleaning inside its slots.

Identify the block before cleaning

Block typeWhat to doWhat to avoid
Slotted wood exteriorRemove knives; wipe outside with a soft damp cloth, then dry it.Do not soak or submerge wood. Do not put a wet cloth or tool in slots unless the maker specifies it.
Removable bristle insertIf designed to come out, remove it and tap debris out or vacuum as its manual directs.ZWILLING advises against wet-cleaning its bristle insert because the narrow spaces are difficult to dry.
Self-sharpening slotsWipe the outside surface with a soft cloth dampened with water.Keep cleaners and other tools out of slots; the SharpBlock manual says to clean the surface only.

Slotted wooden blocks

Remove the knives and wipe the outside with a soft cloth that is only damp, then dry the surface. ZWILLING’s block-care guidance says not to submerge its wooden block. Inside narrow slots, use only a method named by the block’s maker; a generic wet swab or brush can leave moisture where it is hard to see or dry. If loose crumbs remain and the manual gives no internal method, check the maker’s care guidance before inserting anything.

Removable bristle inserts

Check that the insert is meant to be removed, then lift it out as directed. ZWILLING’s bristle-block manual says to tap debris out or use a vacuum. It advises against wet cleaning because the bristles are hard to dry. Let the insert and block return to their dry state before replacing knives.

Self-sharpening blocks

Use the surface-cleaning instructions for the specific block. ZWILLING’s SharpBlock manual calls for a soft cloth moistened with water and says to keep cleaning agents and other utensils out of the slots. The sharpening rods are part of the knife’s path, so do not insert a brush, swab or liquid unless that product’s manual explicitly permits it.

Before putting knives back, wash and dry them according to their own care instructions. If the block’s material or insert is uncertain, find the model number or maker’s manual first; “knife block” describes several designs with different care needs.
