Bamboo vs Metal Steamer Basket: Which Fits Your Pan?

Choose bamboo when you want a stackable basket that sits over a pot or wok and you are willing to dry it carefully after use. Choose a folding stainless insert when one compatible, vertical-sided saucepan is your main setup and compact drawer storage matters. The pan fit is the deciding check: a Joseph Joseph Bloom basket requires a pan at least 18 cm across and vertical sides; its maker says it is not for woks or frying pans.

First check the pan you already own

For the exact Bloom Steel stainless-steel basket, Joseph Joseph specifies a pan at least 18 cm across, with vertical sides; it says the product is not for frying pans or woks. With a lid, the pan must be at least 10.5 cm deep. The maker recommends starting with water reaching the basket base—about 2.5 cm—and topping up as needed so the pan does not boil dry. Use the listing for the exact model, since other baskets have different fit limits.

A bamboo steamer is a separate vessel with its own base diameter and stacked trays. Check that its rim matches the pot or wok you intend to use, that it sits securely, and that the lid closes. Joyce Chen’s manual describes a specific lower-rim arrangement for its models; the water level and support differ by setup.

Choose the format by the job

If your usual job is a small batch in one saucepan and drawer space matters, the folding insert can be a compact choice—provided the pan dimensions match. Its maker’s water and lid rules are part of the fit decision.

If you want stacked trays so separate items can sit on different levels, a bamboo basket is the relevant format. Its diameter must fit the pot or wok, and you need room to dry it after washing. Kama-Asa’s seiro instructions advise washing with water and a brush, avoiding detergent, then drying overnight in a ventilated, shaded place.

Compare the routine after cooking

Joseph Joseph specifies hand washing for Bloom Steel. Kama-Asa’s bamboo instructions describe a different cleaning and drying routine for its product. Use the selected maker’s instructions.

The existing bamboo steamer guide covers setup, liners, food-specific steaming and bamboo care. Use it once you choose the stacked format.

Before choosing

Measure pan opening, wall shape and lid clearance. Then compare basket diameter, working depth, water position, washing, drying and storage. The right format is the one that fits your actual pan and cleanup routine.
